Is an Online Degree Valid for Government Jobs?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the short answer is yes — provided the degree is from a UGC-entitled online program.

What "UGC-entitled" actually means

The University Grants Commission (UGC) approves specific universities to offer specific online degree programs under its Online Learning regulations. A degree earned through one of these entitled programs carries the same legal recognition as an equivalent on-campus degree — it is not a "distance learning" or correspondence certificate.

Government job eligibility

Because these degrees are UGC-entitled, they are accepted for government job applications and promotions that require a specific degree qualification, exactly like a regular degree would be. This includes eligibility for competitive exams and public sector recruitment where a bachelor's or master's degree is the base requirement.

What to double-check before you enroll

Not every "online degree" being advertised is UGC-entitled — some are unrecognized or only partially approved. Before enrolling anywhere, confirm two things: that the university itself is UGC-recognized, and that the specific program (not just the university in general) has UGC entitlement for online delivery. Higher studies and abroad
